Working in the AC

2014 April 17 by Ashley Prince

Working in the Academic Center can be quite entertaining at times. Sometimes the Chinese seem too shy to come in, so they will linger in the hall until they get the courage to come in. They kind of do the same thing when they leave the AC; they will linger around after the tutoring session has ended, unsure of whether or not it is alright to leave. The awkwardness of it can be comical at times. The papers the students write are usually interesting or entertaining in some way or another. A lot times they will use Google Translate to help them express their thoughts in English, but the translations don’t always come out right.  For example, “airplane” is translated as “flying machine”. Another humorous translation I read was, “Her teacher aroused her to learn English.” What the student was actually trying to say was the the teacher encouraged her to learn English. The Chinese students laugh a lot at their mistakes, usually out of embarrassment, but sometimes because they see the humor in it too.
